Each of Hoi An ancient houses is an outstanding individual that belongs to the complex of architectural monument in the old town, so it is easy to be impressed that each basic kernel of this complex is a “alive museum”. Because, Hoi An people have still lived day by day in the inner of the city for centuries, and they have become fond of each ancient architectural buildings together with lifestyle of unique culture in their territory.
Tan Ky ancient house now has more than 200 years old, is considered the best preserved ancient house and the most beautiful one in Vietnam. It is located in 101 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Hoi An City that belongs to the Le clan (comes from Minh Huong, China).
In 1990, this old house is ranked as Historical Monuments of National Culture , and was selected as one of the most important destinations for tourists when they have the opportunity to visit ancient town Hoi An – World Cultural Heritage. This is also the place where stored image of many heads of state and famous politicians who have ever visited Hoi An: General Secretary, Chairman of the People’s Republic of China – Mr. Jiang Zemin, Female Prime Minister of Luxembourg Grand Duchy – Ms. Lydie Polfer, Queen of Spain, etc.
In addition to the local architecture, Tan Ky house is designed with many features that have influenced from Chinese and Japanese architecture. The purlins, roof and ceiling are the traits of the architecture. This house has tubular shape that is very suitable and convenient for traders and businessmen of the old days. It has two street frontages, Nguyen Thai Hoc street frontage is for living activity and Bach Dang one is suitable for trading.
Despite suffering from the ravages of time and flood the house is still largely intact thanks to good materials. The frame of this house is put together by dowel, the foots are pillars sticked on marble and built by brick and thick tile outside. This style of design helps to keep the house to be cool in summer and warm in winter.
Many construction materials are brought from other places, stones and tiles were imported from the North. Many furniture and antique ornaments in the house has appeared since those days.
Tan Ky House has been ranked as a special vestige by Ministry of Culture, which was taken into movies, television and became the most well-known and attractive house for the visitors to Hoi An since 1983. Tan Ky ancient house is estimated to welcome tens of thousands of visitors every year.
